Falcone is een meester op het klavecimbel. Dat bewijst hij met deze cd opnieuw. Met zijn specialisatie in het renaissance- en vroegbarok repertoire is de klavierlegende Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck een perfecte match voor Falcone. Het is een oeuvre dat minder virtuoos is dan zijn geliefde Italiaanse repertoire maar waarbij een heldere structuur cruciaal is. En dit doet Falcone zeer elegant. Met oog voor kleur en contrast blaast hij Sweelincks seculiere variaties nieuw leven in. En het timbre van het gekozen Johannes Ruckers instrument weet Falcone daarbij volledig naar zijn hand te zetten

Fabio Antonio Falcone versteht sich glänzend auf die angesprochenen Balanceakte – egal, ob in reduzierter linearer Konzentration oder vollgriffiger Ambition: Sweelincks Musik gewinnt hier zwischen Leichtigkeit und Strenge Gestalt, als Ausdruck meisterlichen Könnens. Falcone agiert souverän und überlegen, dabei technisch unangefochten, mit Geduld bei der Explikation der strukturellen Qualitäten der Sätze, ohne Scheu auch, in den Fluss deutend einzugreifen, dadurch schöne Schlusswirkungen oder Binnenkadenzierungen erzielend. Er greift beherzt Momente tänzerischen Überschwangs auf, ebenso die sich daraus entfaltende Rasanz.

To be sure, these do fit remarkably well for the harpsichord, but the nice phrasing and use of registration by Fabio Falcone is mainly responsible for the accessibility of the music. He performs instinctively, and the sound quality is excellent, even in the more tortuous of the passagework. Any early Baroque fancier would be well advised to check out this fine disc. This is a revelation on the early keyboard, showing its versatility.

Mr Falcone's rendering of these works gives great enjoyment. He can recognize the difference between the structural parts of the music and the ornamental decorative gesture. There is a flexibility that lets the music breath. So much of this early keyboard repertoire is recorded rather stiffly — not so here.

The hardest thing to overcome in a recording of this kind is balancing out the different volumes of quite different instruments and that has been accomplished superbly. The organ used here is a 17th-Century instrument set in the choir loft of the Church of San Giuseppe, Montevecchio di Pergola. This is a small 45-key manual and 9 pedals, with 21 pipes. The sound is captured well in this recording and Falcone's interpretations are equally fine.
